Farming Eddo
Eddoes are tropical plants grown primarily as a vegetable for its edible corm and also as a leaf vegetable. In Guyana, eddoes are used as a staple. The main production areas are on the Linden Soesdyke Highway.

PREPARATION FOR EXPORT MARKET
HARVESTING
- Harvest by lifting the lower part of the stem in a shaking motion & pulling
gently. A garden fork may also be used. - Transport in well-ventilated wooden crates or durable plastic containers.
CLEANING
- Remove excess soil from the eddoe surface using a soft brush or cotton
gloves. Do not scrape with a knife. - Do not wash unless the market requires such e.g. Barbados requires eddoes
to be completely scraped and washed. - The wash water should contain 150ppm hypochlorous acid. Dip eddoes
into a 500 ppm Benomyl fungicide solution after washing.
GRADING & PACKING
- Well-ventilated cartoons should be loosely packed with sound bulbs of
the same size & shape. Most common cartoon sizes are 40 lb & 50lb. - Caribbean & North American Market – pack in strong, well-ventilated
cartoons containing 18kg (40lbs) of fruit. Ideal temperature s 12oC.
